How does my automatic calorie goal work?

With an automatic calorie goal, your daily budget is built from two things: your energy expenditure (the energy you burn each day) and your weight goal.

Your Energy Expenditure

Your energy expenditure is estimated from your Body Profile: weight, height, age, sex, and activity level. In Body Profile, you can optionally have resting and/or active energy read from Apple Health instead. If you do, your budget updates throughout the day as new activity data comes in, and it's normal to see it shift a little even while you're resting, since Apple Health may revise earlier readings.

With Foodnoms+, Calibrated Energy can estimate your energy expenditure from your food logs and weigh-ins instead of a formula.

Your Weight Goal

Your weight goal turns your energy expenditure into a budget. To lose weight, your budget sits below what you burn. To gain weight, it sits above. Until you set a weight goal, your budget matches your energy expenditure to maintain your current weight.

To set a weight goal, go to Foodnoms settings, select Goals, then Weight.

Choosing What Counts as Success

In your calorie goal's settings, the Success Condition offers two options:

  • Around: aim for your budget, staying within a tolerance you choose.

  • Under/Over: the direction follows your weight goal. While losing or maintaining weight, success means staying under your budget. While gaining, it means reaching it.

Other goal types offer Under, Over, and Around as separate choices.
