Foodnoms for iOS 26: A Fresh Design, New Insights Dashboard, Smarter Label Scanner, and More

Hi, I'm Ryan Ashcraft, creator of Foodnoms. I'm excited to announce Foodnoms for iOS 26, an update that makes nutrition tracking faster and more insightful. We've built a smarter label scanner, made it easier to visualize your progress, and redesigned the interface around how you actually use the app.
When iOS 26 was announced at WWDC (Apple's annual developer conference) in June, I knew it was going to be a busy summer. With the introduction of an entirely new platform design language, Liquid Glass, I saw an opportunity to revisit many old design decisions and build a new foundation for the next few years.
We had ambitious goals with this update:
- Fully embrace the new design language of the platform
- Align the app closer to Apple's Human Interface Guidelines (their official design standards for apps)
- Find opportunities to make the app simpler and more approachable
- Build a new information architecture that aligns with planned features on the roadmap
- Solve critical points of friction
- Make it easier to explore and learn from your data
This update was a journey of discovery. Working with Liquid Glass pushed us to explore design approaches we'd never tried before. One thing I learned is that there's no such thing as a perfect design. Instead of chasing perfection, we focused on creating numerous prototypes and carefully evaluating the constraints to identify which designs offered the most benefit with the fewest tradeoffs.
Throughout this process, we followed our north star: create a simpler experience that felt native to iOS while minimizing friction. This focus helped us make confident decisions about which tradeoffs were worth making.
Here's how that philosophy shaped this update —
Streamlined Navigation
You'll find several changes to the core navigation of the app. The app is now fully centered on the core experience of the app: logging what you eat. The main plus button is now a native component, still located in the bottom-right corner of the screen. On the opposite side, there are dedicated controls to paginate between different days in the food log.

Simply tap on the goals at the top of your food log to browse historical data or change your goals.
The app's settings screen has been simplified. Access it by tapping the back button in the food log tab, then tapping the gear icon. Similarly, you can manage your library by tapping the back button in the food log tab, then selecting Foods, Recipes, or Meals.
Insights: Your Personal Nutrition Dashboard
Insights is an entirely new section of the app where you can create a custom dashboard of the metrics you care about. This extends beyond goals—track your streak, calorie balance, macros, active energy, and any of 44 different nutrients. You don't have to create a goal to add something to Insights. You can also browse for any of these data types by using the search field.

We look forward to making Insights even more valuable in the future.
Smarter, Faster Label Scanning
One of the hallmark features of Foodnoms is its nutrition label scanner. With this update, it's now much more reliable and offers much broader support for different label formats. You no longer have to hold the phone and pan around the label to capture all the data points, making it less frustrating and more accessible.

The new scanner extracts more information, including the serving size, the product name, and the brand. For most scenarios, the scanner does all the work and no manual data entry is required.
You can now scan labels using photos from your library right from the scanner interface.
More Powerful Charts
All charts in the app are now scrollable. There's also a new year option that shows twelve months of data.
This update also introduces three new chart types: Calorie Balance, Macros, and Active Energy. Calorie Balance allows you to visualize your caloric deficit or surplus over time.

Food Logging Made Faster
We've made several notable changes that make it easier and faster to log what you eat:
- Swipe food in your food log to quickly delete it, share it, or log it again
- Change portion sizes faster with simpler input controls
- Re-log yesterday's breakfast or last week's dinner with just a few taps
- Condense your food log throughout the day by tapping on a meal's name to collapse it
Other Usability Improvements
There are many small changes to the app that you may or may not notice. These are largely informed by popular support questions and feedback over the years. We hope that these changes make the app more approachable and easier to learn.
Foodnoms is compatible with devices running iOS and iPadOS 17.4 or later. However, the new design and all new features require iOS/iPadOS 26. An updated Mac version of the app is not yet ready.
If you have any questions or feedback about the update, we'd love to hear from you! Please email us at feedback@foodnoms.com.
We sincerely hope you enjoy this update. If you do, we'd be grateful for a positive review on the App Store. Five-star reviews help others discover the app when they're looking for a better nutrition tracker.
Many thanks to Eli Johnson and Harshil Shah for all their hard work to make this update possible.
